Journey of Discovery - Card of the Week - Krile [27-062L]

Krile from Final Fantasy XIV with a paint brush

Hello, everyone. “Card of the Week” is back, where we showcase cards from the new booster pack every four months! Each week starting from this week, we’ll introduce a card from the new “Journey of Discovery” booster pack, releasing on November 14th. I hope you’ll join us for this weekly ride!

Let’s jump right in and introduce the card for our first installment. Please check out Krile (XIV) [27-062L], who’s also featured on the “Journey of Discovery” package art!

Krile hadn’t appeared much in battles until FINAL FANTASY XIV: Endwalker, but in FINAL FANTASY XIV: Dawntrail, she joins the frontlines as the new job, Pictomancer. Both of her past FFTCG appearances as Krile (XIV) [6-071H] and Krile (XIV) [23-085R] were as Backups, but this time, she’s a Forward. Let’s take a look at the card’s ability.

Krile (XIV) [27-062L] is a 2CP Earth element Forward with 5000 power. You could say her power relative to her cost is standard. However, she also seems to defy the expectations you’d have for a standard card by having 1 of each of the following: an Auto Ability, which activates when she enters the field, and an Action Ability, where you pay a cost.

Her Auto Ability when she enters the field is: “When Krile (XIV) enters the field, if there are 3 or more different Elements among Characters you control, look at the top 4 cards of your deck. Add 1 card among them to your hand and return the other cards to the bottom of your deck in any order.” Although this ability will not activate unless the condition is met, because a card is added to your hand, you could effectively play Krile (XIV) [27-062L] with zero cost. The condition of gathering 3 or more elements is not that difficult, either. As an example, an Earth element card like Shantotto [1-107L] alone could meet this condition, which could also be achieved easily with the help of Light or Dark element characters, too.

Her other Action Ability has 3CP and a Dull cost: “[3] [Dull]: If the cost to use this ability was paid with CP of 3 or more different Elements, play 1 Character of cost 5 or less from your hand onto the field. You can only use this ability during your Main Phase.” While conditional, this is a useful ability that allows you to play a 4 or 5 CP character for 3CP. As mentioned earlier, it is not too difficult for Earth elements to assemble CPs for 3 different elements. It’s also great how, as long as they’re a Character card, she could play any card regardless of whether they’re a Backup or Monster. This makes it easy to play cards such as Tyro [11-072R] in an intuitive and cost-effective manner.
Since this ability can only be used during the main phase, you might also be inclined to think of it as a normal cast; however, it’s an Action Ability, meaning you could use it in response to an action your opponent takes. Such opportunities may be limited, but it’s still good to keep in mind.

What did you think of Krile [27-062L]? We hope you can let her shine. Next week will be Rio’s turn, from the Hobby Japan FFTCG Development Team . He’ll be introducing a Dark Lord equipped with a terrifying ability, so stay tuned!
