Dreamlike Oceans - Card of the Week - Kain [28-081L]

081L Kain

Hello everyone! This is Rio from Hobby Japan's FFTCG Development Team.

I'm in charge of this week's "Card of the Week," introducing a new card from the new booster pack "Dreamlike Oceans" due to be released on March 27th.

Today, we'll be introducing Kain [28-081L] from FINAL FANTASY IV. This is an original illustration by Yukihiro Kajimoto!

Of course, the full art is also impressive, so I hope you'll get your hands on Kain [28-081L] and enjoy it.

Card Effect

Now, let's take a look at the card text.

[28-081L] Kain is a cost 4, power 8000 lightning Forward. And he has Warp, one auto-ability, one field ability that activates when Damage 3 is dealt, and one special ability. It's packed with effects.

Let's get started!

First, Warp

[28-081L] Kain can Warp from your hand by paying two Lightning CP.

A quick recap of Warp.

◆Warp

During your Main Phase, when the stack is empty, you can remove a character with Warp from your hand by paying the listed cost. That card is removed from the game with a number of Warp counters on it equal to the number listed.

If a card with Warp and a Warp counter on it is removed from the game at the start of your first Main Phase, an auto-ability is triggered to remove one Warp counter from it.

When the last Warp counter is removed, an auto-ability is triggered to place that card on the field.

That means Kain with Warp 1 will be available one turn later. That's pretty quick.

Next, let's look at the second auto-ability.

" When Kain enters the field by Summons or abilities, choose 1 Forward opponent controls. Break it."

Since " When Kain enters the field by Summons or abilities " means the ability will also trigger if it is entered the field by Warp, it's definitely better to do so.

What's more, it's incredibly powerful because it can break regardless of power or cost.

When you're struggling to compete against your opponent's powerful cards, rely on [28-081L] Kain to turn the tables!

The third effect is:

"Damage 3— Kain gains +1000 power, Haste and First Strike. "

Damage, Haste, First Strike. Let's review this as well.

◆Damage

If you have taken more damage than the stated amount, that character gains the listed ability.

◆Haste

Forwards with Haste can attack and use abilities with the "Dal" icon in their cost even on the turn they enter the field.

◆ First Strike

If it blocks or is blocked, it deals damage before an opponent's Forward (that does not have First Strike). If it breaks an opponent's Forward this way, that opponent Forward cannot deal damage.

This means that if it has taken 3 or more damage,

[28-081L] Kain has 9000 power, can attack immediately the turn it enters the field, and even gains an advantage in battles with opponent's Forwards.

The card illustration is strong and cool, but the effect is strong and cool too!

And finally, the special ability.

"Jump (S): Remove Kain from the game. Play Kain onto the field at the end of the turn. "

The special ability can be used by discarding a card with the same name from your hand.

By jump, it immediately leaves the field and returns after a short delay. Even if he is chosen by an opponent's abilities or summons, Kain can evade it by Jump. What's more, since [28-081L] Kain is on the field thanks to his ability when he jumps and returns, he can Break your opponent's Forward!

Jump, which can be used to suit the situation, will likely come in handy in many situations!

Compatible Cards

Now that we've looked at the card text, let's introduce some cards that work well with [28-081L] Kain.

[28-081L] Kain's effect is self-contained, so his appeal lies in his ability to be effective without relying on other cards. But if we were to pick a card that works well with him,

I recommend pairing him with [14-122L] Al-Cid.

This is because Kain's auto-ability will still be triggered even if he's placed on the field thanks to [14-122L] Al-Cid's ability.

We recommend using this combination to Break your opponent's Forwards.

Another appealing feature is that because it has Warp, it pairs well with cards like [26-055H] Fina and [26-038H] Physalis that have abilities that support "Forwards with Warp."

With [26-055H] Fina in play, you can search for [28-081L] Kain. With [26-038H] Physalis in play, you can use its ability to play [28-081L] Kain from your hand to the field.

Taking advantage of these combinations, [28-081L] Kain should be even more effective.

Of course, there are many other cards that work well with this card besides the ones introduced here, so be sure to try combining it with various cards to create your own original deck.

So far, we've introduced the illustration, text, and cards that work well with it, but

What did you think of [28-081L] Kain that we introduced this week?

Next time, Producer Kageyama will introduce the characters that appear in the FINAL FANTASY VII film. Stay tuned!
