Crystal Dominion Card of the Week - Celes

Celes from FINAL FANTASY VI

Hi everyone, Richelle here for another Crystal Dominion Card of the Week! Each set I try to pick at least one card that I primarily share during Card of the Week because of the artwork, because they’re a character I love, or that it has a really great ability I want to play with. When all three line up like with today’s card, I get incredibly hyped up! Let’s take a look at today’s card, from FINAL FANTASY VI, Celes [15-036H]!

Celes 15-036H Full Art Celes 15-036H

Isn’t that new art just incredible? The illustration comes from KINSHA creations/Accord Seven, who has contributed some of the other FINAL FANTASY VI art you may have seen this set. Celes is depicted in her concept art-inspired outfit with her signature curved sword. Of course, incredible artwork is great for collecting, but how does Celes stack up in playability?

Celes is a 4 CP Ice Forward with 7000 power, Category VI, and the Job “Rune Knight”. Additionally, she has two auto abilities, the first reads: “When Celes enters the field, select 1 of the 2 following actions. ‘Search for 1 Card Name Locke and add it to your hand.’ ’Your opponent discards 1 card from their hand.’” Her second auto ability reads: “When 1 or more Category VI Forwards you control form a party and attack, select 1 of the 2 following actions. ’Choose up to 2 Characters. Freeze them.’ ’Choose 1 Category VI Character in your Break Zone. Add it to your hand.’”

So, this Celes clearly represents the protagonist “version” we see towards the second half of FINAL FANTASY VI. She searches for Locke, and with either Locke [4-048L] or Locke [12-116L] you have two incredibly solid options. Of course, there are plenty of other Locke cards you could choose, but I imagine those will be the most popular choices. Similarly, she’s learned a bit from her travels with Locke and can force your opponent to discard a card from their hand instead if you don’t need Locke when you play Celes to the field.

Likewise, representing her taking on the leadership role, you can play her just before you would attack with a party of category VI characters for some great abilities. Freezing two characters can be incredibly strong, and something Celes has been known for in the past like with Celes [4-038L] or [8-037R]. Alternatively, you can return a Category VI character from your Break Zone to your hand. This can be great for following up with a Mirage Dive from Locke [4-048L], threatening Shadow Fang from Shadow [11-009L], or even grabbing Terra [10-132S] to follow up with getting back a Summon.

Celes seems most at home in Mono Ice or Fire/Ice, due to the majority of her allies being in those elements. Fire/Ice will give you cards like Interceptor [11-002H] or Belias, the Gigas [2-019R] to give your Forwards Haste… so you can party attack and get full value from Celes’ second ability a little more easily.

All in all, Celes [15-036H] seems like she could be the leader that category VI needs to make their eponymous return… and it doesn’t hurt that she looks good doing it!

Next time, Kageyama-san will present the final Crystal Dominion Card of the Week before the set’s release!

Until next time!
