Changes to rules for paying CP

Hello everyone. This is M, the Director of FFTCG. Thank you all for your continued support and love for FFTCG. Coinciding with the release of the "Blissful Eternity" booster pack on August 7th, we will be partially changing the game rules regarding "How CP is produced and paid." Ahead of the Advanced Rules update, I would like to explain the details of these changes in this column.

Details of the Changes

Current Rules

When paying CP, as a rule, you cannot produce excess CP. However, only when discarding cards from your hand to produce CP, an excess of 1 CP per required Element is permitted.

New Rules

When a CP payment occurs, you may produce any amount of CP you like. Afterward, you determine which CP will be used as payment from the total CP produced. However, you cannot pay excess CP toward the cost, and any CP not used for payment will immediately cease to exist.

Reason for the Change

The current rule—which permits generating and paying excess CP only when discarding a card—was implemented to enable plays such as "discarding 1 card to produce 2 CP and casting a cost 1 card without using Backups."

However, having cases where excess CP "can be produced" versus "cannot be produced" depending on how the CP is produced was a factor that made the rules complicated. Furthermore, since the introduction of Multi-Element cards that possess multiple Elements, opportunities to produce an excess of 2 or more CP have increased, making situations even more complex than when the rule was originally established.

While the game can proceed without issue under the current rules, we have decided to change to a more streamlined system so that players can play with consistent rules under any circumstance.

Effective Date

August 7, 2026

The Advanced Rules will be updated on the same date.

For Pre-release events for "Blissful Eternity" held before the effective date, the current (pre-change) rules will apply.

Points of Caution After the Change

Restrictions on Timing for Produceing CP

CP can only be produced strictly "when a CP payment occurs." For example, you cannot discard a card to produce CP without paying for anything just to prevent the activation of auto-abilities—such as those of [18-019R] Weiss or [16-038H] Byblos—that trigger when "your opponent discard 1 card."

Costs That Do Not Involve CP Payment

You cannot produce CP for cards that can be cast without paying CP, or for using abilities whose costs do not include a CP payment (e.g., "Discard 1 card:").

Disappearance of Excess CP

Any CP not used for payment will immediately cease to exist. Therefore, you cannot perform actions such as "discarding 1 card to produce 2 CP, and then casting two cost 1 cards in succession."

Impact of the Change

With this rule change, certain cards will gain new options and utilization methods. For instance, with [9-021R] Varis, you can discard 3 cards of different Elements to produce 3 types of CP, and by applying 1 CP of each Element toward the payment, you can trigger [9-021R] Varis's auto-ability. The action ability of [27-062L] Krile (XIV) works similarly. However, this method consumes your hand more aggressively than usual, so it is not a play you can always aim for. Additionally, if you have a lot of cards in your hand, you might be able to use [16-119H] Fusoya in a different way than before.

This concludes the explanation regarding the rule changes in this column. For further details, please look forward to the update of the Advanced Rules.

Thank you for your continued support of FFTCG.
