Resurgence of Power Card of the Week - Sonon

Sonon from FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE

Hey everyone, Richelle here kicking off the FINAL FANTASY TCG Card of the Week articles for the upcoming booster set: Resurgence of Power! We’re kicking things off with a card we’ve previously announced but have yet to show the full text for, the set’s Buy a Box Promo, Sonon [18-123L]!

Sonon is a deuteragonist alongside Yuffie in the FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE additional story content, EPISODE INTERmission. He’s a powerful warrior from Wutai who’s sent to Midgar to accompany Yuffie on their mission to infiltrate the Shinra corporation. The duo fight completely in sync, powering up Yuffie’s abilities and crippling their foes. Like many from Wutai, he’s skilled in the art of surprise, moving swiftly and unexpectedly to get the jump on enemies.

Let’s look at his new card!

Sonon 18-123L PR-125

Sonon [18-123L] is a 4 CP Multi-Element Forward with 8000 power, Job Warrior, and category VII, while having both the elements of Earth and Lightning. Sonon has Back Attack, allowing him to be cast at any time, like a Summon. In addition, he has an ability that reads “You can remove 1 Earth Backup you control and 1 Lightning Backup you control from the game (instead of paying the CP cost) to cast Sonon.” Additionally, he has an auto ability with EX Burst that reads, “When Sonon enters the field, choose 1 Forward and up to 1 other Forward. Until the end of the turn, the former gains +5000 power and the latter loses 5000 power.”

Sonon takes the element of surprise to another level, not simply having Back Attack, but allowing you to pay by removing the Backups you control rather than requiring CP. You can catch an opponent off guard in a situation where your Backups are dull by avoiding the CP requirement and letting Sonon jump into play at any time. Thanks to the auto ability, he can both come to the rescue of one of your Forwards, while being removal for an opposing Forward, swinging the game in your favor.

You’ll want to make sure while playing Sonon [18-123L] that you’re using a good mix of Lightning and Earth backups, and particularly Backups with auto abilities that trigger when they enter the field. Shantotto [1-107L] continues to be a staple Backup because of her auto ability, so, if you play 2 or 3 copies, Sonon is able to clear out one you control to make room to play another. Given she has all Elements while on the field, she can also count as the Lightning backup for Sonon’s alternate cost. Matoya (I) [17-076H] also gives you a few different auto ability options, for another Earth Backup option. Lightning has less obvious options, but cards like Zemus [13-077C] and Cid of Clan Gully [17-094C] can give you a recursion angle if you’d like to focus on retrieving characters from your Break Zone with your Backups. Additionally, Reeve [16-104R], can play a 2 cost Forward from your Break Zone, giving some play options to Sonon as you could remove Reeve to help the 2 cost Forward with Sonon’s ability, depending on the situation of course.

Cloud [14-065L] immediately comes to mind as a strong Forward option to pair with Sonon, given Cloud forces enemies to battle him with his ability, Sonon can swing a fight in your favor. Tifa [11-071L] would also be great with Sonon if you want to push a category VII theme. That said, I’d also think he’s a great contender for Forwards with First Strike. Use him to power up low power Forwards with First Strike like Ramza [7-104H] or Jinnai [8-100R] to catch your opponent by surprise and force them to second guess their decisions, since Sonon can always be lying in wait.

What do you think? Are you excited to see Sonon, one of the newer characters from FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, appear in FFTCG for the first time? What type of deck would you play him in? Let us know at facebook.com/FinalFantasyTCG or on Twitter at @fftcg_sqex!

Next week, Kageyama-san will introduce a new man in black, but, no it’s not a repeat of the category IV character, this one’s from category XI.

Until next time!
