Rebellion's Call Card of the Week - Noel

Noel from FFXIII-2

Hello everyone, FFTCG Producer Tarou Kageyama here! It’s finally time to restart the “Card of the Week” series. These articles have been a pre-release staple, where we introduce cards from the upcoming booster pack on a weekly basis. This time, we will be introducing cards from FFTCG’s latest booster pack “Rebellion’s Call” which is scheduled to release on August 12. We hope you’ll stay with us until the end as we’ll be introducing some fascinating cards each week.

In this first article from the latest series, I’d like to introduce a Wind Legend card – Noel [17-056L]. Incidentally, this is the bonus card that will come with a display box purchase, so purchasing a “Rebellion’s Call” display box will get you Noel [17-056L] as a full art card. Let me share that image with you here.

Noel from FFXIII-2

Now, Noel has been made into a card several times already, but this is the first time he appears as a Wind element card. And this particular Noel’s abilities are unlike the types seen before. Let’s take a closer look at Noel [17-056L] – I can sense some new possibilities.

Noel [17-056L] is a 2CP Forward with 5000 power and 2 auto-abilities. It can also gain Haste at “Damage 3”. Although the 2 auto-abilities are independent of each other, they will virtually work hand-in-hand, so I’d like to look at both together. The first auto-ability reads: “When Noel attacks, you may remove Noel from the game. If you do so, at the beginning of your next Main Phase 1, play Noel onto the field.” As stated, Noel is removed when it attacks, so Noel will be removed before doing any damage to an opponent if this ability is used. If you have a card like Snow [7-033R], the act of attacking, in and of itself, will hold some meaning, but that isn’t the true essence of this ability. As mentioned earlier, this works as a set with its other ability.

The second auto-ability reads: “When Noel enters the field due to an ability of Card Name Noel, select 1 of the 3 following actions. ‘Choose 1 Character of cost 4 or more, break it.’ ‘Noel deals your opponent 1 point of damage.’ ‘Search for 1 Forward and add it to your hand.’” In other words, when Noel enters the field at the beginning of Main Phase 1 as an effect of the first ability, the second auto-ability is triggered. And all three options are powerful. You can choose to break a character of cost 4 or more, or you could deal damage to your opponent without fail. Alternatively, you could search your deck for your trump card. Whichever you chose, you will be well-served.

Additionally, when Noel has Haste after you’ve received 3 points or more of damage, the value of these abilities goes up another notch. Without Haste, this ability can only be activated once every 2 turns, since it cannot attack on the turn it returns to the field. Though, with Haste, it will be able to attack every turn. That’s right – as if it’s Yiazmat [9-057L], you will be able to choose to use the most effective of the 3 options at the beginning of Main Phase 1. There’s some drawbacks in that there’s a time lag with having to attack and could be easily dealt with from damage-type abilities and summons due to it being 5000 power, but we could also say it has an unbeatable ability for a Forward that can easily be played with 2CP.

I mentioned “new possibilities” up top, but what do you think? I hope Noel [17-056L]’s potential blossoms in your hands. I’ll leave it at that for this article. Next, Richelle should be introducing a Light Legend card. Stay tuned!
