Opus XIII Card of the Week - Ovelia

Hey everyone, Richelle here with the 2nd of my two Card of the Week previews for Opus XIII: Crystal Radiance. This time, I’m sharing a new version of a character who has appeared in FFTCG before, but we haven’t seen her since all the way back in the first set! This week is Ovelia [13-090L].

Ovelia comes from FINAL FANTASY TACTICS, with this card’s artwork taken from the updated version on PSP called “FINAL FANTASY TACTICS: THE WAR OF THE LIONS”. Many characters throughout the story attempt to exploit her in order to obtain the Ivalician throne. Aside from her political usefulness, she’s a White Mage in her own right, employing incredible White Magic abilities on the battlefield. Let’s take a look at her card.

Ovelia [13-090L] is a 3 CP Water Backup from Category FFT, and she has the Job Princess. She has an auto ability which reads “When a Category FFT Forward you control is put from the field into the Break Zone, draw 1 card. This effect will trigger only once per turn.” Additionally, she has a Special Ability “Aegis” which reads “[S][Dull]: Choose 1 Forward you control. Until the end of the turn, it gains Haste and ‘When this Forward is put from the field into the Break Zone, play this Forward from the Break Zone onto the field dull.”

Her first ability definitely plays into her political power within the world of Ivalice. Having her on the field will make it beneficial to have your FFT Forwards fall in battle!

Lightning/Water Ramza Forward card from Final Fantasy Tactics. When Ramza enters the field, choose 2 Forwards an opponent controls, your opponent puts one in their Break Zone and returns the other to their hand.

This is definitely a big boost to the FFT category, and works great with the recently revealed Ramza [13-121R] card, as well as previous FFT focused versions of Ramza like [10-103R] or [3-119L]. We also have a hint at a character that could be useful with her right in this card’s image, as Delita [4-087R] and [1-112R] both deal with breaking your own characters.

Additionally, Agrias [1-151R] is strong to include, as this Ovelia makes her a strong play at any point in the game. An early Agrias will get you your backup into play, but if you already have her, you’ll be able to use Aegis to protect your Forwards and reuse any auto abilities that trigger when a Forward enters or leaves the field. I think Agrias [1-151R] with Ovelia [13-090L] will be one of the strongest pairs since Agrias will have a couple of “bonus lives” in addition to allowing you to draw 1 card from Ovelia’s auto ability.

Of course, there are plenty of other strong FFT Forwards to pair with Ovelia, and Aegis doesn’t require your choice to be an FFT Forward, so cards like Thancred [12-124L] and Yuna [12-105L] can be included to help support your FFT Forwards, while being incredibly strong Aegis targets themselves.

That’s it for this week. While I’m only showing two cards this time around, Tim will be back next time with a BIG Forward… I don’t really want to say more about it though, it’s just pretty intimidating, K?

Until next time!
