Dawn of Heroes – Card of the Week Shinryu [20-127L]

Art depicting Shinryu

Hey everyone, Richelle here with what will be not only the last Card of the Week for Dawn of Heroes, but also my final Card of the Week. I wanted my final card to be a big one. This is a character who took on EVERY FINAL FANTASY protagonist and enemy at the same time in DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY NT, so it feels like the perfect one for me to end with, Shinryu [20-127L] with gorgeous artwork by Miki Yamashita.

Let’s take a look!

Shinryu [20-127L] is a 5CP Light Forward with 9000 power, Brave, Category DFF, and Job Dragon. If your opponent controls 3 or more Forwards more than you, the cost required to cast Shinryu is reduced by 3. Shinryu has an auto ability that reads “When Shinryu enters the field, you may search for 1 card and add it to your hand.” Shinryu also has a Special ability “Tidal Wave” which costs 6 CP and reads, “Break all the Forwards opponent controls. You can only use this ability during your turn.”

Much like the epic climactic battle in DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY NT (highly recommend checking the scene out), Shinryu [20-127L] is an absolute force to be reckoned with, threatening all of your opponent’s Forwards. At a total of 11 CP, to cast Shinryu and then cast the Special ability, it is a fairly massive price to pay with an equally massive reward. Now, if you do get that cost reduction, 8 CP for a one sided board wipe seems quite good. Since Shinyru [20-127L] is a Light card, you can slot him in any deck fairly easily, but remember that without a card like Cosmos [1-183H] or Materia [13-103L], he won’t be able to share the battlefield with another Light card.

This is only the second card named Shinryu in FFTCG, but if you think you might need more than the 3 copies to ensure Tidal Wave, Shinryu [14-115L] does exist as an option. That said, even having the option to use Shinryu [20-127L] for the Search ability will give your deck some extra consistency, allowing you to draw exactly what you need if you’re in a bind. With that in mind, Shinryu feels like it acts in two modes, either a 5CP searcher on a 9k Brave body, or an 8 CP one sided board wipe… on a 9k Brave body. When you think of it in that way, it’s very versatile, adapting to what you need in the moment. Also, keep an eye out for the DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY COLLECTION SET coming later this year, as Shinryu [20-127L] might have synergy with some of the cards in there.

I hope you enjoyed my final reveal along with all of the Dawn of Heroes reveals we’ve shared. I started this column six years ago to share upcoming cards I was excited about, or some of my favorite cards that had already been released, so it’s been very emotional to type up my final reveals. I know leaving this with Kageyama-san, it will be in good hands, but I wanted to thank everyone for all of the excitement you’ve had on Card of the Week days. I’ll be continuing to watch the website as a fan and player, along with the rest of you, to see which cards Kageyama-san shares in the future!

Until next time.
