Emissaries of Light Card of the Week - Wol

Wol is standing in front of a building

Hey everyone, Tim again, with a legendary spoiler - this time, a Wind Forward from Emissaries of Light.

A picture of the Wol Card with all it's effects

Wol [16-044L] is a great 5CP Wind Forward with the Job Warrior of Dawn, and keeping with the tradition of Wol’s from previous sets, the Category is Mobius.

The card reads: The cost required to cast Wol is reduced by 1 for each Character of cost 5 or more you control (it cannot become 0).
The Forwards of cost 5 or more other than Wol you control gain “This Forward cannot be chosen by your opponent’s Summons or abilities.”
When you cast a Character of cost 5 or more, draw 1 card. This effect will trigger only once per turn.

So, let's take a dive into Wol's unique abilities!

Wol costs 1CP less for each character of cost 5 or more you control, down to a limit of 1CP which is quite extreme for a 9k Power Forward. While cost reductions in FFTCG aren't rare, it's quite unusual to count all characters, including Backups! (Star Sybil [5-091H] wants to know your location... 👀).

Even just within Mono Wind, there's lots of almost-free Forwards that 'feel' like 0CP Forwards, to help accelerate Wol out, like Bartz [1-080H], Kan-E-Senna [4-055H], and Fina [8-060L].

Furthermore, Wol grants a couple of exceptionally powerful field abilities that will dramatically alter your playstyle.

Firstly, the other Forwards of cost 5 or more cannot be chosen by your opponent's Summons or Abilities! There are an enormous number of powerful Forwards in Wind, and the usual elements, that you like to team up with Wind, that will really appreciate that your opponent has to deal with Wol first, before they can deal with other powerful cards - like Bismarck, Lord of Mists [14-042L], Yiazmat [9-057L], and other iconic Forwards that opponents usually try to destroy on sight like Leviathan, Lord of the Whorl [14-102L].

Wol might also make it very difficult to answer Neo Exdeath [12-110L], making the life of your opponent even more miserable.

While Wind has access to other cards that make it difficult for your opponent to interact effectively, like Y'Shtola [5-068L], Wol can do so for a potentially very low CP cost, while also bolstering the field with his higher power.

But that's not all! Wol also grants you a card draw, the first time you cast a 5CP or more Character during each of your turns, making it even easier to build an enormous board!

You all probably know this already, but you search for Wol with Echo [10-047R] which is always nice to have a Searcher in the same color, and you can grant Wol Haste with Meia [9-095L] if you are playing Wind/Lightning.

The focus on building, protecting, and rewarding a high-costed deck might put you in mind of Verstael, the card draw maestro in one of FFTCG's premier aggressive decks. With Wol on the field, Verstael [11-023H] now has a good chance to draw 4 cards in the right deck, on top of protecting your valuable turbo-investments. It's also a lot harder to interact with and interrupt Fusoya [9-094L] from being targeted and re-played by Rinoa [6-041L] when Wol prevents targeted removal.

Stay tuned for next week, when RB is returning with another Emissaries of Light Spoiler –
And as you like hints so much, here is some math for you: This card has appeared already in FFTCG and this time is their X-th appearance, while X = their Final Fantasy Title 😉 Enjoy and see you next time!
